Gladys williams, of the Culpeper Senior Nutrition Center, holds the 2011 L.B. Henretty Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award she received Thursday evening at the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce banquet at Daniel Technology Center.

If angels walk among us, Gladys Williams is one of them.

The longtime director of the Culpeper Senior Nutrition Center earned the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce’s highest honor at its 97th Annual Meeting and Banquet Thursday night.

Williams is the 2011 recipient of the L.B. Henretty Memorial Outstanding Citizen Award.

Dressed in a denim vest and sneakers, the always youthful, always smiling community servant wiped her eyes as she approached the stage at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center.

“Johnny and I are not usually at a loss for words,” said Williams of her partner in accepting the award before hundreds of community leaders. “All I can say is thank you so much, and I truly appreciate it.”

For nearly 30 years, she has dedicated her life to serving local seniors at the nutrition site, a program of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board. Williams loves everybody and lets them know it. But she also shows it. Williams volunteers at church and with the Salem Ruritan Club, and has been described by her seniors as, “One in a million.” To be around Williams is akin to sitting in a ray of sunshine.

A few years ago, Culpeper County Government named Williams among its honorary Culpeper Colonels and she’s also won the town’s Spirit Award.

Last year’s L.B. Henretty Award winner, Chuck Gyory, in his introduction, bestowed another honorary designation upon her.

“She’s been rightly called Culpeper’s Mother Teresa,” he said. “She has worked tirelessly to support nutritional health and the mental and physical well-being of local seniors.”

Gyory said Williams was the perfect example of what the award was all about: Service and assistance to individuals or groups.

“The primary consideration should be effectiveness of service and leadership,” he said.

Williams received a standing ovation as she got up from her chair in the back of the large room to accept the acknowledgement.

Earlier in the evening, the chamber welcomed its 2012 chairperson, Raven Yates. A Culpeper native and lifelong resident, Yates said she was humbled and honored to serve in the role, helping to lead a chamber of commerce that’s been around for 97 years and now has 520 members.

She encouraged those in attendance to take business matters into their own hands.

“We are the economy,” Yates said. “We need to stop waiting for the economy to turn. We need to turn our economy.”

That happens locally through partnerships, organized programs and support, all of which was evident at Thursday’s chamber event.

Wow Paula!

Thank you for your inspirational email. Thank you for leading this prayer movement for the past 9 months.

It’s amazing that you sent your email this morning and I saw it because I wasn’t planning to check emails today. Yesterday evening after sending the Pray Culpeper email and doing a corresponding blog post, you were the one pastor who came to my mind and considered calling you to invite you to Pray Culpeper. I know you are a woman after God’s own heart and “give yourself continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4).

I miss seeing you at the monthly Culpeper Ministerial Association meetings from 8-9:30 am on the third Tuesday of each month. Whenever I ride by your home on my bicycle, I think about you and pray for blessings for you, your family, your church, and your ministry.

Blessings to experience God in extraordinary ways for extraordinary fruit!

Randy

Hi Randy,

I wanted to tell you that NBWC [New Beginnings Worship Center] has been meeting for prayer at 1pm every Wednesday for the last 9 months. We begin with streaming prayer with Billye Brim (billyebrim.org) at 1:00, praying for a Great Awakening. The Lord had spoken last November that no man could save America, only and awakening to God. Millions around the world are praying together at this time for our nation, & nations around the world. That usually ends about 2:15 p.m. and then we continue for a couple of more hours as the Holy Spirit leads us. We often take a break about 4:30 until 6:30 to eat, take care of things, etc. (some stay & sit quietly with music playing) and then we start again, sometimes watching a dvd teaching on prayer or giving scripture, then more prayer. It is a day set aside for assembling ourselves & joining our supply of the Spirit of God for united prayer. Anyone is welcome.

I have desired to come on Wednesdays to join with you at noon, but have been preparing for prayer here at that time. We do pray for a glorious awakening in Culpeper, the churches, the plan of God, the saints…soon several of us will join you at noon, then just leave a little early. Be blessed in all you do. What a privilege it is that God chose us to live on earth at this time!

Shalom,
Pastor Paula

Session One (9 — 12 noon): Drawing close to the presence of the Lord — practical teachings to equip you in the secret place.

In this session, we will focus on three topics.

* Encountering Jesus

First, we will take time to learn how to encounter Jesus. We will discuss how to practice “His Presence” throughout the day. Encountering Jesus is something that we can learn to do, and it will affect our lives forever.

* How to read and pray the Bible

Did you know that while you read the Word – you can actually interact with Jesus? In this session we will learn many different practical ways to read and pray your Bible.

* Listening for His Voice

Also during this time we will practice deeper encounter with the “voice of God.” We will teach you to hear the voice of God by using the techniques that have been very successful in the 0 to 5 year old group. You will leave this session empowered to meet God daily.

** Lunch Break and free time for fellowship, a walk along the trail, or some quiet time. Lunch provided; please let us know you’ll be here! **

Session Two (2-5 p.m.): The essence of the secret place

In this session we will talk about our secret place in God, and what it means to truly abide with God. Only you have the ability to love God the way that you can. We will learn how to meet with God and minster back to Him in the secret place of our hearts… that place where you go where it’s just you and God.

** Dinner Break ** Provided! Please sign up in advance. This is a great time to get to know each other better. There will be a special gathering of prayer leaders during this time. Anyone can join in if interested in seeing what God is doing in our city! UVa students are encouraged to gather to exchange ideas about God’s move on grounds!

Session Three (7-10 p.m.): The Awakening!

In our prayer times concerning this day, several of our prayer team discerned the need for a real awakening among believers, that the Bride of Christ would be awakened to her Beloved! In this session, we will see how God awakened His people throughout history, and how He is doing that today! Don’t miss this evening session, as we will also have deep times in worship, prayer and prophetic encouragement from Benjamin.

Again, sign up in advance.

We will pray for every name on the list!

—————————————

Special Evening of Worship and Prayer
The Night Before
Friday, November 20, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Harp and Bowl Style Worship and Prayer

Join us as we pray for a great awakening in our city!

*Benjamin Atkinson is a lover and servant of Jesus, ministering to the body of Christ through 24/7 prayer and worship. He and his wife Nadia served at Kansas City International House of Prayer for over four years before moving to the Richmond House of prayer.
You can't have a picnic in a war zone! We are in a war - a spiritual war. God is preparing for the great harvest. Great revival and awakening always begins with prayer and repentance. Pray for supernatural humlility and fear of the LORD.

“You can’t have a picnic in a war zone!”

That’s what Pastor Baker Rigg told me yesterday morning after the monthly Culpeper Ministerial Association (CMA) meeting. I learned that Baker began intense weekly prayer and worship services at his church, Church on the Rise [http://church-on-the-rise.org/index.htm] (1136 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA 22701) on Monday evenings (7 pm).

We are in a war – a spiritual war. It seems that most of God’s children are not even aware of the intense spiritual battles going on, let alone being engaged and properly prepared for war.

Prayer is how we fight the battles against our enemy. Now more than ever in my lifetime, America needs our prayers. “Prayer for such a time as this” is the theme for the NDP this year.

During the CMA meeting yesterday, Nancy Sharman shared a powerful and inspirational devotional about prayer. Nancy is the Regional Coordinator for Virginia, 5 other states, and Washington DC for the National Day of Prayer. She is a mighty woman of God.

If you live in Culpeper, I invite and encourage you to join us for the weekly community prayer gathering every Wednesday at Noon at Reformation Lutheran Church (415 S Main Suite # 101, Culpeper, VA 22701). The time is now to humble ourselves as the Body of Christ in communities and repent of the widespread evil in our communties.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, I believe in my heart of hearts that You are stirring the greatest prayer revival and the history of America and the world. I ask Your Holy Spirit to send personal invitations to the hearts of Your children to get involved. Soften our hard hearts. O LORD have mercy. Forgive us Father for our many transgressions. Amen.

Blessings to get engaged in community prayer NOW!

“Blessed to be a blessing”

Yesterday, I went to the monthly “Christ In Culpeper” (Prayer Culpeper) meeting at the Culpeper Train Depot. Eight prayer warriors were there initially and one more joined us before we finished. The presence of God was very strong.

While we were praying I saw a vision of a large waterwheel dipping down into the water (God’s living water) and bringing water up to people waiting in the window above. Many, many people are so thirsty for God’s living waters.

Also while we were praying, the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart strongly to resume weekly prayer meetings. When I got home, I found a letter (article) in the mail from Burt Swardstrom titled “Prayer Revival In America.” Burt is Director of Communications (Prayer Coordinator) for Mastermedia International.

As I was reading that article (see below), I knew with absolutely certainly that I am to start a noon-time weekly prayer meeting in Culpeper in which business people can meet for prayer that will rapidly evolve into daily prayer meeting all over our community. Prayer and faith go hand-in-hand. Prayer and love for Jesus go hand-in-hand.

I feel so deeply the pain of broken hearts and broken families in our community. PRAYER IS THE ANSWER. There is no revival without prayer. The only way a city will be transformed is when pulpit and marketplace leaders come together regularly to pray. That is foundational to every great revival.

Jeremiah Lamphier held his first prayer meeting in a Reformation Church in New York City on Wednesday September 23, 1857. Within weeks, hundreds of people were gathering to pray. It’s interesting that in 2009, September 23 is also a Wednesday.

Late yesterday afternoon, I spoke with Brad Hales, pastor of Reformation Lutheran Church in downtown Culpeper. He has agreed to allow his sanctuary to be used for prayer time on Wednesdays at Noon. So we will start weekly prayer meetings from Noon – 1 pm on Wed, September 2.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, we praise You as the God of prayer, the God of revival. Thank You for stirring my heart to begin weekly prayer meetings in downtown Culpeper starting Sept 2. I’m expecting an explosion in faith and God-centeredness. May Your Holy Spirit send the invitations to people’s hearts to come. Thank You Jesus!

Blessings to experience the power of prayer in your community!

Wesley Duewal (Revival Fire: ZondervanPublishingHouse)

1857 Prayer Revival in America

A quiet, zealous forty-six-year-old businessman in New York was appointed on July 1,1857 , as a missionary in downtown New York at the Dutch Church. Jeremiah Lamphier had been converted in 1842 in Broadway Tabernacle, Finney’s church that was built in 1836.

Lamphier felt led by God to start a noon-time weekly prayer meeting in which business people could meet for prayer. Anyone could attend, for a few minutes or for the entire hour. Prayers were to be comparatively brief. Lamphier’s group met on the third floor of the old North Dutch Reformed Church on Fulton Street in New York. Lamphier printed some handbills announcing the prayer meetings with the title, “How Often Should I Pray?” He left these in some offices and warehouses. He also put one on the door of the church on the street side.

The first day, September 23, 1857, Lamphier prayed alone for half an hour. But by the end of the hour, six men from at least four denominational backgrounds joined him. The next Wednesday there were twenty. On October 7 there were nearly forty. The meeting was so blessed that they decided to meet daily. One week later there were over one hundred present, including many unsaved who were convicted by the Holy Spirit of their sin.

Within one month pastors who had attended the noon prayer meetings in Fulton Street started morning prayer meetings in their own churches. Soon the places where the meetings were held were overcrowded. Men and women, young and old of all denominations met and prayed together without distinctions. The meetings abounded with love for Christ, love for fellow Christians, love for prayer, and love of witnessing. Those in attendance felt an awesome sense of God’s presence. They prayed for specific people, expected answers, and obtained answers.

Newspapers began to report on the meetings and the unusual spirit of prayer that was evident. Within three months similar meetings had sprung up across America. Thousands began praying in these services and in their own homes. I n New York, gospel tracts were distributed to those in attendance, with instructions that they pray over the tracts and then give them to someone God brought to mind.

The three rooms at the Fulton Street Church were filled beyond capacity, and hundreds had to go to other places. By early February a nearby Methodist Church was opened, and it immediately overflowed. The balconies were filled with ladies. By March 19 a theater opened for prayer, and half an hour before it was time to begin, people were turned away. Hundreds stood outside in the streets because they could not get inside. By the end of March over six thou- sand people met daily in prayer gatherings in New York City. Many churches added evening services for prayer. Soon there were 150 united prayer meetings each day across Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Meetings began in February in Philadelphia. Soon Jayne’s Hall was overfilled, and meetings were held at noon each day in public halls, concert halls, fire stations, houses, and tents. The whole city exuded a spirit of prayer.

PRAYER MEETING FERVOR

Almost simultaneously noon prayer meetings sprang up all across America in Boston, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and in a multitude of other cities, towns, and in rural areas. By the end of the fourth month, prayer fervor burned intensely across the nation. It was an awesome but glorious demonstration of the sovereign working of the Holy Spirit and the eager obedience of God’s people.

America had entered a new period of faith and prayer. Educated and uneducated, rich and poor, business leaders and common workmen-all prayed, believed, and received answers to prayer. Even the president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, attended many of the noon prayer meetings. This was not a revival of powerful preaching. This was a movement of earnest, powerful, prevailing prayer.

All people wanted was a place to pray. Sinners would come and ask for prayer. Someone would individually pray for them, and in minutes the newly saved person was rejoicing in Christ. Prayers would be asked by name for unconverted friends and loved ones from allover the country. In a day or two, testimonies would be given of how the prayers had already been answered. In some towns, nearly the entire population became saved.

Six months previous to Lamphier’s prayer meeting boom, few would have gathered for a prayer service. But now a spirit of prayer occupied the land, as though the church had suddenly discovered its real power. The majority of the churches in most denominations experienced a new dimension of prayer. The Presbyterian Magazine reported that as of May there had been fifty thousand converts of the revival. In February, a New York Methodist magazine reported a total of eight thousand conversions in Methodist meetings in one week. The Louisville daily paper reported seventeen thousand Baptist conversions in three weeks during the month of March. And according to a June statement, the conversion figures stood at 96,216–and still counting. all but two of the youth in one high school were saved. A similar event took place in Toledo, Ohio. These are just brief examples of what was happening constantly all across the nation.

The accounts of the prayer meetings during those revival years describe how the people would quietly gather at the place of prayer promptly at the appointed hour. Whoever was leader for the meeting—a layman or a minister— arose and announced a hymn. They sang one or two verses with great joy, the leader prayed briefly, and then turned the service over to the members. Any person was free to speak or pray for no longer than five minutes. If the person took more than that time, a small bell was rung and it was someone else’s turn.

Requests for prayer, often coming from distant places, were spoken or read. Often sinners arose and requested prayer for themselves. Members gave testimonies of answers to prayer, and the people praised the Lord. Brief exhortations on prayer or revival were allowed but limited to five minutes. Many testified of revival progress in various locations. Promptly at the closing of the hour the leader rose and pronounced the benediction, and the people quietly left the building. Occasionally someone might stay behind to pray with a spiritual seeker.

THE INVISIBLE CLOUD OF GOD’S PRESENCE

A canopy of holy and awesome revival influence—in reality the presence of the Holy Spirit—seemed to hang like an invisible cloud over many parts of the United States, especially over the eastern seaboard. At times this cloud of God’s presence even seemed to extend out to sea. Those on ships approaching the east coast at times felt a solemn, holy influence, even one hundred miles away, without even knowing what was happening in America.

Revival began aboard one ship before it reached the coast. People on board began to feel the presence of God and a sense of their own sinfulness. The Holy Spirit convicted them, and they began to pray. As the ship neared the harbor, the captain signaled, “Send a minister.” Another small commercial ship arrived in port with the captain, and every member of the crew converted in the last 150 miles. Ship after ship arrived with the same story: both passengers and crew were suddenly convicted of sin and turned to Christ before they reached the American coast.

The battleship North Carolina was anchored in New York harbor as a naval receiving ship. More than a thousand young men were on board. Four Christians agreed to meet together for prayer and knelt on the lower deck. The Spirit of God so filled their hearts with joy that they broke into song. Ungodly men on the top deck heard the singing, looked down, and saw the boys kneeling. They began running down the stairs, mocking and jeering. The convicting power of the Holy Spirit so gripped them that by the time they reached the bottom deck they fell on their knees and began crying for mercy.

Strong men who were deep in sin were broken down by the Spirit’s power and knelt humbly in penitence and faith. Night after night the sailors prayed, and hundreds were converted on the ship. Ministers were sent for, and they came out from shore to help in the gracious work of the Spirit. The battleship became a mighty center of revival. Converts of the movement, completing their periods of training, were sent out to other navy ships. Wherever they went revival fires were kindled in other naval vessels.

IN HOMES, SHOPS, FIELDS, AND CHURCHES

Reports came in of hundreds being converted in prayer meetings, private homes, workshops, and fields. Often the doors of businesses held signs reading, ” Closed, will reopen at the close of the prayer meeting.” Five prayer meetings took place daily in Washington, D.C. Five thousand or so attended daily services in the Academy of Music Hall.

In Philadelphia, Jayne’s Hall removed partitions and added space for six thousand people to attend daily meetings. At this time George Duffield wrote the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” For months multitudes of churches opened every evening for prayer, and some of them had from three to five services of prayer each day. All were filled. The services consisted of simple prayer, confession, exhortation, and singing. But it was ” so earnest, so solemn, the silence. ..so awful, the singing. ..so over-powering” that the meetings were unforgettable. A canvas tent was erected for outdoor meetings, and it immediately filled with people. In four months’ time, a total of 150,000 people attended the ministry in the tent, with many conversions. Philadelphia churches reported five thousand converts.

The Presbyterians in Northern Ireland heard of the awakening in Philadelphia and sent fraternal delegates. These delegates returned to their homeland and reported what they had seen, and the revival broke out in Ireland, spreading across the British Isles.

REVIVAL IN THE ARMY

Because of the bitter tensions of the Civil War and the slavery issue, for a time it seemed that the southern states would not be as powerfully influenced by the revival as the northern ones had been. Others dispute this assumption. An unusually powerful revival broke out among the southern troops stationed around Richmond, Virginia, in the autumn of 1861. It began in the hospitals among the wounded men and then spread into the camps as these men returned to active duty. Prayer meetings were organized and hundreds converted. The movement spread rapidly throughout the army, reaching the troops of Tennessee and Arkansas.

Revival was encouraged by Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, who were well known as devout Christians. By the mid-summer of 1863 the revival had spread through all the Confederate armies, and thousands of men had been converted. Chaplains and lay missionaries went out among the troops, preaching and distributing tracts and dealing personally with hungry hearts. By the end of the war at least 150,000 soldiers had been converted, and more than a third of all of the southern troops had become praying men. The revival among the southern troops was primarily a revival of prayer, as the earlier revival in the North had been. While the best estimates are that 6.6 percent of the entire population of the United States was converted during the revival, the percentage among the southern troops was 21 percent. The North really did not win the war—prayer and a mighty revival did!

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)

What is more glorious in life than the moment someone invites Jesus into their heart?

Today is Christmas, a day Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. While we don’t know even the actual month Jesus was born, we pay special tribute this day to the King of kings and LORD of lords.

For the individual, true Christmas begins the moment he sincerely invites Jesus into his heart! There is no greater joy than surrendering your life to Jesus because it’s at precisely that moment that the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in you and “God with us” becomes personal.

Early yesterday morning while I was journaling, Patti May called me out-of-the-blue. This was the first time we had talked in several months. The first thing Patti told me is “Randy, we have to get America saved!” That got my attention.

She then went on to share her amazing story, the first 16 minutes of which is recorded online at today’s Link of the Day. While Patti has always been fervent for Jesus since I first met her two years ago, she’s red hot on fire for Jesus now.

So what happened? A few months ago, Patti got involved with the Great Awakening. Since then, Patti has personally led hundreds and perhaps thousands of people to the Lord. In the year prior to that, she didn’t lead anyone to Jesus, which is the norm for most Christians.

Patti shared that five years ago, Pastor Rodney Howard Brown’s daughter died at Christmas. He responded by saying, “OK devil, that’s it. A BILLION SOULS. I gave you my best gift, God, and now the devil is going to pay.” That began one of the greatest soul-winning campaigns in the history of America.

Through her connections with Pastor Brown, Patti convinced him to bring the Great Awakening training to VIRGINIA on January 15-17, just a few days before the Presidential inauguration. Word of Life in Loudoun County will be the host church. For more details, see today’s Link of the Day. Jack Stagman, the most active person I know in the spiritual transformation of Virginia, is strongly supporting this. It’s interesting that Jack also lost his daughter at Christmas time a few years ago (in a car accident).

Here are just a few of Patti’s comments:
“Most people are sitting on their blessed assurance and they don’t know how to win the lost.”
“Everyone is called to evangelize, but most people don’t know how to do it.”
“We (churches) have had enough programs.”
“Randy, I have never seen anything so easy in my life.”
“I have never seen anything like this. It’s not us. It’s God!”
“I’m winning Spanish to the Lord, Muslims to the Lord, Hindus to the Lord”
“Every church needs to have this (training).”
“We must get behind this!”
“It’s just God throwing everything together.”
“We have to come together and win the lost.”

Prayer Power
Jesus, You said in Luke 19:10 that Your purpose in coming to earth was “to seek and to save that which was lost.” That’s what Christmas is about – sharing the love and light of You with those around us. Thank You for bringing the Great Awaking training to Virginia on January 15-17, 2009. May many pastors and Christian leaders choose to participate. We ask the LORD of the harvest to send many laborers into the fields where the harvest is plenty. Thank You for Your enormous favor on those who get behind Your billion soul vision. Amen and hallelujah!

The Gospel Soul-Winning Script

Has anyone ever told you that God loves you and that He has a wonderful plan for your life? I have a real quick, but important question to ask you. If you were to die this very second, do you know for sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you would go to Heaven? [If "Yes"— Great, why would you say "Yes"? (If they respond with anything but "I have Jesus in my heart" or something similar to that, PROCEED WITH SCRIPT) or "No" or "I hope so" PROCEED WITH SCRIPT.] Let me quickly share with you what the Holy Bible reads. It reads “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” and “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. The Bible also reads, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. And you’re a “whosoever” right? Of course you are; all of us are. continued on reverse side—

I’m going to say a quick prayer for you. Lord, bless (FILL IN NAME) and his/her family with long and healthy lives. Jesus, make Yourself real to him/her and do a quick work in his /her heart. If (FILL IN NAME) has not received Jesus Christ as his /her Lord and Savior, I pray he/she will do so now. (FILL IN NAME), if you would like to receive the gift that God has for you today, say this after me with your heart and lips out loud. Dear Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Forgive me of my sin. Wash me and cleanse me. Set me free. Jesus, thank You that You died for me. I believe that You are risen from the dead and that You’re coming back again for me. Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Give me a passion for the lost, a hunger for the things of God and a holy boldness to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m saved; I’m born again, I’m forgiven and I’m on my way to Heaven because I have Jesus in my heart. As a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I tell you today that all of your sins are forgiven. Always remember to run to God and not from God because He loves you and has a great plan for your life. [Invite them to your church and get follow up info: name, address, & phone number.]

Subject: GREAT AWAKENING EVANGELISM MEETINGS – WASH DC

Dear Pastors and Leaders,

You are cordially invited to attend the Dr. Rodney Howard-Browne pre-crusade Great Awakening Tour Power Evangelism event that will be conducted by part of his team January 15th – 17th, 2009. The Great Awakening Tour Power Evangelism is designed to empower and encourage the body of Christ with the Word of God to be a witness for Jesus Christ.

In Baltimore, Maryland, 1195 individuals were trained and we saw 20,658 decisions for Jesus Christ. In Phoenix, Arizona, 2630 harvesters were trained and 46,541 individuals made decisions for Jesus Christ.
Have you given your all?
What simple thing can you do to offer hope to hopeless people this Christmas?

Yesterday morning I went to the monthly Culpeper Ministerial Association meeting held at Culpeper Hospital. Despite having a very full schedule, I chose to go primarily to honor Pastor Randy Orndorff for his two years of outstanding service as President of the Culpeper Ministerial Association. Pastor Randy has been a faithful supporter of our Pray Culpeper team.

Boy, did God have an unexpected Christmas surprise for me. Our guest speaker for the day was Rev. Joseph Samuel Reeves (Sam), a native of Liberia, West Africa. Sam returned to the U.S. after the barbaric and horrific Liberian Civil War, which lasted more than 15 years.

David Bean introduced Sam with a powerful story sharing how God clearly instructed him to covenant with Sam. As a result, Sam became Project Manager for Operation Rescue Liberia. David serves as President of the Greater Charlottesville District for the United Methodist men.

Sam started by sharing the history of Liberia. I knew very little about that country. I learned Liberia is the second oldest country in Africa and the only African nation that is a creation of the United States. Liberia was born in the U.S. and especially Virginia. Almost all the presidents have either come from the U.S. or been descended from people here. The name Liberia derives from our word liberty. Learn more about Liberia and its ties to slavery at today’s Link of the Day.

Sam then shared three important points about Christmas:

1) Christmas is a reminder that God operates out of the ordinary. Elizabeth and Mary got pregnant is unusual manners (Luke 1:26-38). God wins over traditional wisdom and human logic. He wins over fear, doubt, and skepticism. Sam shared his goal to raise $30,000 by March 2008 to ship more than $1,000,000 of much needed medical and educational supplies to Liberia to rebuild a nation ravished by Civil War.

2) Christmas is a reminder that God transcends selfishness and provides hope in hopeless situations. The initial prophecy of incarnate Jesus coming to earh in the form of man reminds us that God seeks to save fallen humanity (Gen 3:15). The star of Bethlehem that fascinated human history and transformed lives demands our sensitivity to human needs and sufferings wherever they exist (Num 24:17). See also Isaiah 9:14 and Isaiah 9:1-7.

3) Christmas is about giving because God gave His best to all of us. We are to give from the heart, in accordance with our abilities and to glorify God (Ex 25:2, Ex 6:1-4, Mark 12:42). We are to give our widow’s mite, to give because generosity provides abundance, to give in our spare times, and we are to give wholeheartedly (Mark 12:42, Deut 15:16, 2 Cor 2:1-8, 1 Ch 29:9). Sowing and reaping go hand-in-hand (2 Cor 16:2, Mal 3:10, 2 Cor 9:6-7).

Sam’s story so deeply touched my heart that I decided to create a free website for Rim of Grace Ministries to help Sam communicate God’s important message much more effectively. It’s interesting that near the close of 2007, the 400th anniversary year of the founding of Jamestown Virginia, that God moved so mightily in my heart. Perhaps God will use this opportunity to bless the entire continent of Africa. After all, Jesus was born in a manger in little, tiny Bethlehem.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, my heart is deeply troubled over what is going on in Liberia. We commit Operation Rescue Liberia to You. Thank You for Your promise to establish our very thoughts. Be Lord over the website that is designed. Be Lord over how Sam and his team communicate. Be Lord over the $30,000 Sam has requested. Be Lord over Liberia. Use this nation and opportunity to bless people throughout Africa. I pray people in Virginia will rally behind this worthy cause. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

What was the Fulton Street Revival?
Will you BE THE ONE to lead the way to gather people in the marketplace to pray together?

The last Great Awakening or the Layman’s Revival began on September 23, 1857 with one man praying.

In 1857 there were 30,000 men idle in the streets of New York. Drunkenness was rampant, church attendance was declining, and financial panic swept the nation following a stock market crash.

Jeremiah Lanphier of the Dutch Reform Church started praying, “Lord, what do you want me to do?” And the Lord spoke to him and said, “Prayer.” And so he distributed flyers for a prayer meeting to be held from noon to 1 p.m. on September 23, 1857 at a church on Fulton Street near the financial heart of the city—Wall Street. He hoped to minister to the spiritual needs of businessmen. For the first half hour he prayed alone. Then six men finally showed up. The next week 14 came, and attendance steadily rose and then literally exploded.

Within a few months, over 10,000 people were getting saved a week in New York City. Noon time all over the city, every building that could hold people housed prayer meetings. Then the movement began spreading across America.

That first prayer time kicked off a movement leading to salvation for some two million people before it was over.

What made this revival unique was that there was no preaching involved. It was actually the presence of God. People from ALL DENOMINATIONS and social classes just showed up and prayed together.

Today God moves the same way when the same conditions are met. All revivals are ignited by prayer. In the first, second, and third Great Awakenings, people prayed. God moved. Are you willing to pray for unity in our community, our leaders, and the igniting of a wave of revival?

Come to the heart of Culpeper County – the Board of Supervisor’s Meeting Room – at noon on Sep 24 and watch God’s handiworks unfold. For more information on The Fulton Street Revival watch the short and extraordinary video at today’s Link of the Day.

Help spread the word across America through email. No matter where you live, it’s not too late to plan your own revival meeting in the heart of your community during this upcoming week.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, in 1853 one man started a prayer movement that quickly led to the salvation of more than 1 million people in the United States. That led to a massive outflow of missionaries to the world from America. If a similar prayer revival were to happen today, that would be equivalent to 10 million people getting saved. May we be the kind of people You can do this through. Bring revival to nation after nation. In Jesus name, we pray and give You glory. Amen.

Blessings to lead the way in your community!

If you knew today was you last day on earth … how then would you live?
What would you do more of? Less of?
What would you make sure to say to your loved ones?
What would you do or not do?
What would you “let go” because it really doesn’t matter in the big picture?

Today marks the six year anniversary of 9-11, when four planes flown by terrorists destroyed the two World Trade Center towers, severely damaged the Pentagon, and claimed innocent lives on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Probably none of the victims that dreadful morning suspected it would be their last ever on earth.

How many lives are lost unexpectedly every day? For how many would life never be the same? Sudden death; it keeps happening.

Since July 3, I have been participating in a weekly prayer conference call with a small group of people around the nation praying for Virginia Morton’s book “Marching Through Culpeper” (MTC) to be made into a mini-series and a major motion picture. We believe God is going to use this movie to heal the heart of America.

During our prayer call on August 14, Virginia prayed for Butch Mills. She thanked God for how excited he was about Rick Heeren’s teaching about reaching entire cities for Jesus. We have prayed for him each week since.

On August 30, tragedy struck. Butch while he was working on a sewer line in a trench in Culpeper. The ground collapsed all around him and he was buried up to his neck in concrete and rubble for more than five hours before being rescued and flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center. He broke every rib, his scapula, sternum and clavicle. He has a punctured lung and bruises to his kidneys and heart. He has multiple fractures to the area around one eye and sinus and to his right shoulder. He remains in critical condition on a ventilator.

I barely even know Butch, but I know he’s sold out to Jesus. Carter Mills, Butch’s son, is the star kicker on the Culpeper High School football team and a good friend of my son. Julie Brooks, his niece, did her first triathlon in Culpeper this summer and now is a superstar triathlete. Jonathan Brooks, Butch’s nephew, is a local chiropractor who sent me an email asking me to pray for Butch shortly after his accident.

Our whole community is rallying around this champion for Christ. He is much loved by many, many folks in Culpeper. Our local newspaper has had 11 front page articles about Butch in the last 12 days. Tonight, the Culpeper United Methodist Church is hosting a candlelight prayer vigil to pray for Butch’s healing. This begins at 7:30 PM at Comet Stadium, the former stadium used by the Culpeper High School football team.

Even if you are not able to attend the prayer vigil, please join us in praying for God to completely heal Butch. Thank you.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, we don’t know why bad things happen to good people, but we do know that You are a master at taking things meant for evil and turning them into great things that bring You glory and draw people to You. In unity with every one of my readers and many people in Culpeper, we ask You to touch Butch with Your healing hand and make him well. Make his life a testimony of Your goodness, greatness, and saving power. Stir the hearts of everyone who comes to tonight’s prayer vigil to live each day as if it’s our last on earth – for You. Thank You Jesus. We love and adore You. Amen.

Some of you may not be aware that a loved member of our church, Butch Mills, was the man trapped in a trench that caved-in last week here in Culpeper, Virginia. He is in severe condition at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville with pneumonia. He suffered every rib broken, broken scapula, sternum and clavical. He has a punctured lung and bruises to his kidneys and heart. He has multiple fractures to the area around one eye and sinus and to his right shoulder.

A candlelight prayer vigil will be held tomorrow evening, Sept. 11, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. at Floyd T. Binns Middle School Comet Stadium. Please bring a candle.

If you are not able to attend, please lift a prayer for healing to his lungs and cure for pneumonia. He is much loved by many, many folks in the community.

Subject: Daily Grace and Truth – My Last Day on Earth – 09-11-07

The morning was clear but muggy, quiet and inviting for a walk and talk. Jill and I crested the hill less than a mile from our house and suddenly came upon a horrible crash scene. Several cars, a van and a truck entirely blocked five lanes of traffic. About ten emergency vehicles were parked to block traffic with flashing lights, and several more wailing sirens approached. How many lives had been lost? For how many would life never be the same? Sudden death; it keeps happening.

Six years ago today thousands of Americans died unexpectedly when the Twin Towers collapsed after assault by terrorists. Thousands of talented, loving and beloved people perished. Their stories are familiar, their last words and their last deeds celebrated. In the blink of an eye many knew the end would soon approach. How many had regrets for how they’d lived their last days on earth?

Gospel singer, Stephen Curtis Chapman, wrote a song* prompted by observation of a funeral procession. After pulling to the side of the road, and bowing to pray for the bereaved of the departed, the thought that wouldn’t recede was that it would one day be him; perhaps even that same day. “If this should be my last day on this earth, how then should I live?”

Jesus urged his followers to live one day at a time, fully investing themselves in those things that mattered most:

Matthew 6:33 & 34 – Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. (The Message, Eugene H. Peterson)

If you knew today was you last day on earth . . . how then would you live?
What would you do more of? Less of?
What would you make sure to say to your loved ones?
What would you do or not do?
What would you “let go” because it really doesn’t matter in the big picture?

Just as those who naively ascended the Twin Towers September 11, 2001 didn’t know that it was their last day, neither do we. So how will we live?

Prayer
Lord, thank you for liberating us to live fully in the moment as if it were our last. This is a profound and simple truth and freeing to “full life.” Would you provide the courage to act or speak, or to refrain from acting or speaking with this reality at the forefront of our minds? That what we say or do may be our last words or deed and to make them count for best, for your best, for the best of those you have given us to love and serve. Amen.

On May 11-12, 2007, the same weekend America’s 400th Anniversary celebration was taking place in Jamestown Virginia, Battle Cry 2007 took place at the Nissan Pavilion in northern Virginia. About 15,000-20,000 youth and youth leaders showed up for this amazing event sponsored by Teen Mania Ministries [www.teenmania.com]. Ron Luce, the Founder and President of Teen Mania, challenged the youth of our nation to “Rise Up” and let their voices be heard to reclaim America for God. The fact that Battle Cry took place in northern Virginia is very significant because that area has been a spiritual stronghold of the enemy in Virginia. Be sure to visit today’s Link of the Day to see photos from Battle Cry 2007.

As I reflect back on what happened this past weekend at Battle Cry 2007, I’m in awe of how God has blessed the united prayers of our Pray Culpeper team. Not only did God multiply the number of Battle Cry tickets that Dewey McDonnell purchased from 40 to 400 to 800, but He then united the hearts of many of our local youth leaders to bring their youth to Battle Cry 2007, and He moved this event from Baltimore to Virginia, making it easier and cheaper for our local youth to attend.

God also gave Dewey the opportunity to display our nine-foot wide Pray Culpeper banner at the Nissan Pavilion and to get on stage with Ron Luce to share the 40-400-800 miracle in front of thousands of people live and to millions more through TV and the Internet.

In all honesty, I didn’t feel like driving from Culpeper to Northern Virginia on May 12 to attend the Battle Cry 2007 event. The main reason I went was to support and encourage Dewey. But God really touched my heart to bless and empower the youth around the world through what I experienced.

Because of my close relationship with Dewey through Pray Culpeper, he gave me a special credentials pass that allowed me to move about anywhere freely at Battle Cry 2007. Even though I’m not a youth leader, Dewey invited me to participate in the meeting led by Ron Luce and John Haas to equip the 800 or so youth leaders in attendance at Battle Cry 2007 to be more effective in their ministry. God blessed me with a seat at the very front. While John was teaching about the importance of a leader functioning both as a captain and a coach, I learned he is in charge of all the Teen Mania events that take place across America. After the meeting, the Holy Spirit prompted me to speak briefly to John and give him the Harvest Evangelism DVD with Transformation Hawaii on it.

Around 7:00 PM while I was sitting with Dewey, a 16 year old stranger from Maine came and sat next to me. He introduced himself and began sharing his testimony about how Teen Mania radically altered his life. I learned that his mother committed suicide when he was just 12. His father had been a busy businessman. When his mother died, this boy had two younger siblings, including a 2 year old sister. After the death of his mother, this boy felt hopeless and began cutting himself. Then God brought him to his first Teen Mania event at the age of 13 and he was saved. Since then he has been on five mission trips with Teen Mania Global Expeditions [www.globalexpeditions.com] to foreign countries. On one trip to China, God sat this teenager next to the Vice President of China, allowing him to share about the impact Jesus has had on his life. This was the most mature 16 year old I have ever met in my life. And because of Teen Mania he was red hot for Jesus.

Around 7:30 PM, Dewey and I went backstage to wait for Ron Luce to call Dewey forward to share the Pray Culpeper miracle. While we were waiting, John Haas came up to us and began talking. This gave me the opportunity to share with John how the voice of the LORD told me in 2006 that a spiritual tsunami was coming to Virginia in 2007 unlike the world had ever seen before. When I explained to John that God brought Battle Cry to Virginia to bless our state on the same weekend as America’s 400th Anniversary celebration in Jamestown, he was amazed.

Prayer Power
Most graciously, heavenly Father, thank You for bringing Battle Cry to Virginia on the same weekend that America celebrated the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown, the birthplace of our nation. Thank You for using Teen Mania to ignite a spiritual bon fire in Virginia. Thank You that Teen Mania has helped hundreds of thousands of teens across America acquire the fire for Jesus. Thank You for Ron Luce, John Haas, and the rest of the Teen Mania team. Bless their families. Thank You for all the people You brought to Battle Cry 2007, including several hundred form Culpeper. Water the seeds that were planted with Your miracle grow so we may experience the spiritual tsunami You spoke of in this pivotal 2007 year. Bless Teen Mania by using Your supernatural highway of communication to send this message around the planet. Thank You Jesus, our LORD and King! Thank You for being our all-in-all. Amen and Hallelujah!
